Terms of Use

Welcome to StarFace. These Terms of Use (the "Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Hatchify Pty Ltd ("Hatchify", "StarFace", "we", "us" or "our"), the Australian company that publishes the StarFace mobile application and related services (together, the "App"). They explain the rules for using StarFace and the limits of our responsibilities. Please read them carefully.
The short version. You must be 13 or older. You own the photos and videos you create, but you give us permission to host and display them so the App can work. Be kind and lawful — harassment, hate, nudity and illegal content are not allowed, and we have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material. AI outputs are not perfect and must not be used to deceive. Subscriptions renew automatically through the App Store. Nothing here removes the consumer guarantees you have under Australian law.
1. Acceptance of these Terms
By downloading, accessing or using StarFace, you agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated by reference. If you do not agree, please do not use the App. If you are using StarFace on behalf of another person or an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these Terms on their behalf.
2. Eligibility
StarFace is intended for users aged 13 years and over. The App is not directed to, and must not be used by, children under 13. By using StarFace you represent that:
- you are at least 13 years old;
- if you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf; and
- you are not barred from using the App under the laws of Australia or any other applicable jurisdiction.
If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we will close it and delete the associated data. For more on how we protect minors, see our Child Safety page.
3. Your account
To use most features you will create an account using an email address. You agree to:
- provide accurate, current and complete information and keep it up to date;
- keep your login credentials secure and not share them with anyone;
- take responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account; and
- notify us promptly at safety@starface.mobi if you suspect unauthorised access or any security breach.
You are responsible for the device you use and for any mobile data or carrier charges incurred while using StarFace.
4. Licence to use the App
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable licence to download and use StarFace on a device you own or control, for your own personal and non-commercial use. This licence does not transfer any ownership in the App to you, and all rights not expressly granted are reserved by Hatchify.
5. Your content
You own what you create. Photos, videos, captions, comments, messages and other material you capture, post or send through StarFace ("Your Content") remain yours. We do not claim ownership of Your Content.
To operate the App, we need your permission to handle Your Content. You therefore grant Hatchify a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, process, adapt (for example, resizing or applying a filter you select), display and transmit Your Content solely to provide and improve the features you use — such as showing your posts in the feed, delivering your stories, processing AI portraits, and routing your direct messages to their recipients. This licence exists only so the App can function; it ends when you delete the relevant content or your account, except for copies that recipients have already received (for example, a filtered photo sent in a chat) or that we must retain for a limited time for backups, security or legal reasons.
You are responsible for Your Content and confirm that you have all rights necessary to share it and to grant the licence above. We do not sell Your Content, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
6. Acceptable use and prohibited conduct
StarFace is a place to be creative and connect respectfully. You agree not to post, send or share content, or engage in conduct, that:
- harasses, bullies, threatens, stalks or intimidates any person;
- promotes hatred or violence against people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation or gender identity;
- contains nudity, sexually explicit or pornographic material;
- is unlawful, or promotes, facilitates or instructs others in illegal activity;
- impersonates any person or entity, or misrepresents your affiliation with them;
- is spam, or involves bulk, automated or deceptive messaging, follows or engagement;
- scrapes, harvests or collects data or content from the App by automated means;
- reverse engineers, decompiles, disassembles or attempts to derive the source code of the App, or interferes with or circumvents its security or technical limitations;
- infringes the intellectual property, privacy or other rights of any person; or
- introduces malware or otherwise disrupts, overloads or harms the App or other users.
Zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material
We have an absolute, zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and any sexualisation of minors. Such content is removed, the account is permanently terminated, and we report it to the relevant authorities and child-safety organisations as required by law. 7. AI features
StarFace offers AI-powered features, including AI portrait generation and AI-assisted effects. When you use these features:
- outputs are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, unexpected or vary between attempts — they are creative tools, not statements of fact;
- you must not use AI outputs to deceive, defraud or impersonate any person, or to create misleading content that could reasonably cause harm;
- you must not upload images of other people without their consent, and you must have the rights to any image you provide as input; and
- you remain responsible for how you use and share AI-generated results, and all of the rules in Section 6 apply to them.
Live beauty and AR effects run on your device. We do not store or upload raw face data unless you explicitly choose to enable a feature that requires it — see the Privacy Policy for details.
8. Subscriptions, AI credits and purchases
StarFace is free to download and use, with optional paid offerings:
- Premium subscription — unlocks additional features and presets on a recurring basis.
- AI credits — consumable credits used to generate AI portraits and similar outputs.
All purchases are processed by the Apple App Store under its own terms, and payment is charged to your App Store account. Prices are shown in the App before you confirm.
Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
Cancellation. You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in your App Store account settings. Cancellation stops future renewals; it does not retroactively refund the current period.
Refunds. Except where required by law — including the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law — payments are generally non-refundable, and consumed AI credits are not refundable. Refund requests for App Store purchases are handled by Apple in accordance with its policies.
9. Moderation and enforcement
We may, but are not obliged to, review content and activity on StarFace. Where we reasonably believe these Terms have been breached, or to protect users, the public or the App, we may take action including:
- removing, restricting or limiting the visibility of content;
- issuing warnings; and
- suspending or permanently terminating an account.
For serious or repeated breaches — and always in the case of CSAM — we may act without prior notice. If you believe we have acted in error, you can contact us at safety@starface.mobi.
10. Intellectual property
The App, including its software, design, presets, filters, text, graphics and the names, logos and marks "StarFace" and "Hatchify" (the "Marks"), is owned by or licensed to Hatchify and is protected by intellectual property laws. Except for the limited licence in Section 4, nothing in these Terms gives you any right to use the Marks or the App's content without our prior written permission.
11. Disclaimers
StarFace is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we make no warranties or representations of any kind, whether express or implied, about the App — including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that AI outputs will meet your expectations. Your use of the App is at your own risk.
Nothing in this section excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy that you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that cannot lawfully be excluded.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Hatchify and its directors, employees and partners will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, or any loss of profits, data or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of (or inability to use) the App.
Where our liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, our liability is limited, at our option, to re-supplying the relevant service or paying the cost of having it re-supplied. Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes any consumer guarantees, rights or remedies under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
13. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Hatchify from and against any claims, losses, liabilities and reasonable expenses (including legal costs) arising out of your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the App, or Your Content, except to the extent caused by our own breach or negligence.
14. Termination
You may stop using StarFace at any time and can delete your media or your entire account from within the App. We may suspend or terminate your access as described in Section 9, or if we cease to operate the App. On termination, the licence granted to you in Section 4 ends, but any provisions that by their nature should survive — including content ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability and indemnity — will continue to apply.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect new features or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the App. Your continued use of StarFace after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.
16. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Australia, and you and Hatchify submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Australia. If you use StarFace from outside Australia, you are responsible for complying with your local laws. This choice of law does not deprive you of any protection afforded by mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country of residence.
